Hi all,
Over this last weekend Tasmania celebrated is 50 years of karting. There was a meeting held at Burnie with lots of old karts turning out. Id Just like to get peoples thoughts on whether the old karts should be raced in groups determined by era or simplay driven round the track as demonstration.
Cheers Danton

Demos only I think. I have done a couple of demos and the main aim of the participants is to have fun driving them. Some drive them to the limit while others cruise.
On the face of it racing is a good idea - vintage cars and bikes do it - but at the moment we are too small to make it viable. However It does happen in the UK and the USA. Maybe in the future we will have the numbers to make a couple of classes possible.
The other issue is validation. For a demo there is not a problem if some of the parts are not from the era. I am restoring a 70's kart at the moment but until I can source all the right bits will have newer brakes and some other parts. Ok for a demo but would it be fair in a race? In the USA there are endless discussions on their newsgroups about what should or should not be allowed.
The main problem is probably insurance and liability. The latest regulations for demos have put more restrictions on how we demo to prevent us racing each other. I suppose the idea that some of the karts without nosecones or sidepods have more power than a Rotax is a bit daunting for the authorities. Most of the people currently driving these are used to this but if racing started then people used to the modern style of racing may have a problem.
As far as i'm aware, we're suposed to be on the track with only those in our own era. Eg. I have a 1963 Ashford with a Victa 125 and usually grouped with other Villiers and Victas from the same time. Then there is usually a group of McCullochs and then reeds and rotarys and twins..
I think that it sould only be a show. It's not like anyone can goto their local kart dealer and ask for a '65 Bug kart with a Mac10...or whatever... just won't happen.. Not only are the karts hard to get but parts can be just as hard. Break something in a race, good chance no one around would have a spare...
