Hypothetical situation: Say a friend of mine (not me) managed to round the holes that the rear hub nuts go into on the magnesium rims by driving around on a wheel not done up correctly. Should that friend throw the rim out now or is there a quick fix?
Thanks a lot.

yeah, that's what happened last nite. I got to the kart shop at Eastern Creek just as the guy was driving away. Bogus.

LOL. only kidding. Tell him to buy new wheels as the movement will loosen the nuts as u drive and it will get worse.
Had the same problem with one of my rims.Someone (not me ) didn't tighten up one properly and I ended up with the same problem. They weren't hugely out of shape but enough to make differance.I just make sure that I do the rim up supertight and haven't had a problem
Give them to a machine shop and they will put steel inserts in there. All wheels should have them standard and the first thing I do is get them put in when we buy new ones. Make sure you get a shoulder put on them and the nut locks down on the shoulder.

Just make sure the inserts are made shorter than the thickness of the rim - you still need to clamp the rim and not bottom out on the inserts
I agree that a T shaped insert is a great way of holding on a rim.. the nut torquing on steel instead of aluminium works a lot better.
Good call on making sure the insert is clamping the rim and is not too long..
Yea good idea. Are the inserts a readily available item?
On the subject, has anyone maybe come up with some little tool that you could use to lock your rear axle while you tighten the rear wheel nuts?
Yeah mate it's called a cable tie & it fits over the brake pedal
Yea been there ,done that.

HAHA or just big muscles like mine :D haha not really I just wrap my arm around the wheel.
I'm interested in getting some inserts
Are they readily available & where from?
No, you have to have them custom made. You supply the damaged wheels and a hub and they will drill out the hole on the stud centre and make the inserts to fit that hole size. When the inserts are made, fit them with some loctite to prevent them coming out of the wheel. It is most probably not a job for the average kart shop unless they have a mill and rotary table so you may need to find a local machine shop. Don't get the shoulders made more than about 1 mm thick as if they are made too thick the wheel studs may finish up too short. It amuses me that the AKA and other bodies insist on nylocks for everything except wheel nuts which are most probably the things that come loose the most or more accurately are left loose. Of course if you use bolts the shoulder depth should not be an issue.
