If you don't have a buddy to practice with, how do you get good at overtaking? I was watching Craig Stauner in Rotax Heavy on Saturday in Sydney.
I ran into about 3 different people during my heats but they were rich so its cool.

"I ran into about 3 different people during my heats but they were rich so its cool" - lol
I don't know about other ways to practice but as far as overtaking goes the key is to be decisive IMO. I'm quite new to karting my approach is you're either going to make the pass or you're not. Know how hard/late/early you can go, make your mind up early and do it. The times I see people get into trouble is when they think they can, change there mind, maybe think about it again and then decide the pass is on :P
Also, if you're anything like me there isn't a pass available on every corner of each lap lol
I reckon there is only three things you can do....
1. Practice and practice until your basic laptime give you a reasonable chance for overtaking opportunities. Hard to overtake if you are slower than your competitiors.
2. Occaisionally practice being off line like you would be when overtaking, and getting back on line as quickly as possible. Just pretend another kart is there. This is simple, but I think important - it's easy to hesitate when overtaking because you suddenly find yourself driving a line you have never driven before....and as Scott says, hesitation can be bad for clean overtaking.
3. Get yourself in as many races as possible.
I think you will find wiser heads than me would suggest the last one is the most important thing to do.....
Cheers
I think you're spot on about the as many races as possible. I just find it such a race day such a waste of time. I got in 15 laps on Saturday thanks to some technical difficulties beyond my control (not tightening the hub).
It'd be great to have an earpiece connected to a coach in your ear during racing to remind you of cues... or at least some Lady GaGa.
You can't beat race time and practice but you could think about getting some advice from 'experts'. It might cost a bit but I have seen people really fast-track their technique with good one on one coaching. You local kart dealer or club could help or certainly know of an experienced driver who could give you some track time. Drivers like Troy Hunt ( Top Gun Racing school NSW) and Kip Foster (WA) are great at this.
Ask around and pretty soon others will be asking you for advice.
Good luck
RIPPLE STRIPS lol .. Nah jks jks try to stay away from the nasty ones ... Mind you at Eastern Creek they're excellent
Just time is all you need, keep driving keep practicing keep racing and you'll get better over time
in races when ur close enough to someone, just stick it up the inside. Don't hesitate or think twice about it....just do it!
easier said. I tried that angle and went too fast and ran a guy off the road on a 90 degree left.. then i braked harder and went so slow, he went around the outside of me!!
Experience ay.

Like the guys have said here you need to be decisive. Sometimes it will get you into trouble but you need to go for the gap as it pays of most of the time. If you want practice and I'm not sure what class you're in but being in a clubman on practice days trying to go around newer rotax and leopard drivers is one way to get better. They'll drive away down the straights then its up to you in the corners to try and stick with them and pass them. Mixed class practice sessions with J's, S's and leopards will help you
u dont just throw the kart up the inside callan.... u need to get close to them and if u dont know the other drivers style then sit behind him for a lap or 2 and find his weak spot. then put it in the inside of them but be smooth and fast. but u also cant think twice about it and if u hesitate too much then you will start to get angry cos you wont be able to pass cos you wil be thinking too much

Just close your eyes and throw it in.
But really now, just keep racing rich kids till you get a hang of it.
attitude might help
Good call. I dig it.
Dylan Lindgren said:try a racing simulator like rfactor or iracing. it will help out immensely with racing technique like switchbacks, blocking switchbacks, and generally positioning your car/kart on the racetrack so you increase your chances of passing, and decrease your chance of being passed. its makes it a lot easier when you can just press the reset button when you make a failed move, rather then having to fix all the damage.
