Well, the enemy here is carbon. With use, your pipe builds up with carbon. Inside the pipe is a cone, perforated with a bunch of holes (like, a couple of hundred). The more carbon build-up, the smaller the holes get... so dipping it in acid removes the carbon and allows the exhaust gas to flow freely...
yep, basically brings it back to new again.. obviously it wont fix any dents uv got from crashing into people :P but as far as the internals go.. removes all the carbon...
Acid dipping is the easiest way (because u hand it to a bloke and pay him to do it!) but iv also heard of people using an oxy to burn the carbon out... although i dont think it would work very good!
The best "do it yourself" way is to get a piece of PVC pipe, seal one end and get a tight fitting cap for the other. make it just longer then your pipe... Fill it with a caustic soda solution and leave your pipe to soak in it for a few days.. takes longer then the professional acid dipping method, but apparently works justu as well, and is cheaper!
Absolutely Josh - Caustic Soda bath is good. Caustic costs about $5 for a big tub from the supermarket. We have 2 exhausts for each kid, so we've always got one being "dipped" or bathed, and one on the kart. As you say the longer you leave em the better they go.
Best part is seeing all the cr*p come out of them when you take them out :) Make sure you have plenty of running water available and do it on the grass preferably (if you can find any these days!).
Yeaaah, tahts what we ahve, costic soda bath, we used to dip our j exhausts in therem gotta leave them for about 1-2 weeks.
Good thing is - you can leave 'em as long as you like. It's not unheard of for us to leave them for a month.
i've done both, the dip and the burn.. the dip works better, but takes ages, and we only have 1 exhaust, so we tend to burn it out.. doesnt work so well but its like a quick fix. not a huge difference in power when we first did it, but it depends on what condition it was in i suppose, and every little bit helps.
we do both at home, i forget how dad does the burning, but the bath, we just got a really old wheelie bin, and did the supermarker caustic soda thing. after the wheelie bin melted and took half the backyard grass with it, we realised that you need to line the bin.. again, i forget what we lined it with.. but it works a treat now
