QUIZ #2

Chose the drivers in order of photos

I know some of you will recognise some, but that's all I will say for now.

If it is too hard I will give some hints.

OK that's the grid.

I was going to include naming the circuit to win, but it's hard enough.

The clues should help identify the track.

If I told you, knowing the circuit would give the game away easily I beleive.

Please ignore the numbers printed under each photo,

just count the photos from the top in that order.

TOO easy! But to win you need to name all drivers in order.
I'll find the time to post photos of the other drivers some time today.

Well we all know who 001 is. 006 is Big Rev Kevin Bartlett, 012 I think is Ian Big "PETE" Goeghan. 020 I think is a very young Howard Marsden on the grid at Bathurst in about 1970 - 71 and the last one is Don O'Sullivan. I know some others but I am too tired to think about who they are now

I was also driving in the touring car events as support races. = another clue.

I'm sure hidden away in storage I have 8mm film of this event taken in the pits near the causeway = another clue?

Yes you have done well all are correct.
But you need to make up the whole grid to win. ;D

Please count the photos down from the top, ignore the printed number under them.

So Kevin Bartlet is number 5, and so on...

Hi Jase maybe a bit of respect is required to this Australian Champion driver, many times. = another clue.

Unfortunately he was killed driving a F5000. = another clue.

I can take a joke though.

Think of or look up overseas drivers = another big clue.

6 could be Max Stewart.

You are correct, number 6 is Max Stewart.

He also drove karts up to interstate competition level, but his size restricted him.

Max won many Australian Championships, 1.5 litre, F2, this Championship at least twice = another clue,

and F5000 Australian Championship.

Killed on a practice day at Calder while testing a F5000, somehow running into a slower vehicle.

Jase, He may have missed out on the looks department, a bad photo or photogenically disadvantaged.
Certainly with a bit of make up it would resemble him.

All these drivers and others raced in this Series in different years, before this year or later,
but non of these drivers competed in the race in the year concerned. = another clue.

Jack Brabham, Denny Hulme, John Harvey, Pedro Rodriguz, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Piers Courage,
Greg Cusack, Phil West, John Walker, Stirling Moss, Alfredo Costanzo, Fred Gibson, Bruce McClaren, Jochen Rindt.

There are 4 drivers from USA in the field. = another clue.

There are 2 drivers from Canada. = another clue.

There are 10 Australian drivers in the field. another clue.

There are 5 drivers entered as from UK, though 1 is ex N.Z. born. = another clue.

There are 2 drivers entered from NZ.

There is 1 driver from Belgium. = another clue.

In this year the Surfers Paradise Qld. round was flooded out. another clue.

They had the Sandown round 1st,

but many overseas drivers had commitements,

they were shipping their cars from Melbourne.

#3 Initials M.E. the American press rated him the fastest on 4 wheels.
He was 4th At Pukekohe NZ this years series.
M.E. drove a Surtees TS8/Chev F5000.
Due to a stuck throttle in practice he beltered a barrier, causing serious car damage. He was OK.
DNS this race as forced out by the crash in practice.

#15. R.G. with fag in mouth.
Amoungst the top drivers in the Continental F5000 series.
R.G. drove a Lola T190/Chev F5000.
A practice accident with severe car damage forced him out
DNS this race.

#17. M.G. Finished 7th at Pukekohe this series.
M.G. drove a Lola T192/Chev F5000.
Teamed up with Frank Gardner in a works prepared car.
Raced in Europe and South Africa.
A cracked engine block in practice forced M.G. out.
DNS this race.

#19 E.N. Had a DNF at Pukekohe caused by a puncture.
E.N. drove a Brabham BT29 Cosworth.
E.N. suprised many with his speed in the smaller FVC 1850cc engine,
staring in the top half of the grid.
His day job was flying as a Air Transport pilot.

#18. T.P. from Belgium droopped out at Pukekohe with loss of oil pressure in the race.
In this series he drove a Mclaren M10B/Chev F5000.
T.P. also drove a Mclaren M8C sports car in Europe this year.
T.P. finished 5th in this race.

#2. C.A. drove a Lotus 70 / Ford F5000 in this series.
Previously he had driven Ferrari's in this series, was a Ferrari GP F1 team driver.
C.A. finished 2nd in this race.
C.A. was named as one of the best F1 drivers never to have won a F1 GP, though he won many other races.
It was bad luck, engine failures that let him down in F1 GP's in one race he led until a last lap engine blow up.
C.A. was a previous champion in this series.
Born & raised in NZ. Now retired on the family farm in NZ.

In a German F1 GP Niki Louda had that famous firerry crash.
C.A. refused to restart the race after Louda's crash, so he was fired from that F1 GP team.
C.A. stated "I'd seen too many people fried in racing cars at that stage. When you've driven past Bandini,
Schlesser, Courage, Williamson, another shunt like that was simply too much,
it was a personal decission."

OK, so this may be TOO HARD.
Especially for those babys, forum members born since this event.

But I expected members to look up previous Champions they didn't know in motor racing.

Therefore I have added a sketch of the circuit in this race.

More clues to follow, especially if you don,t even know the track :D

I'll have a punt at the track as I have no idea about the drivers, is it Warwick farm?

Hi Matt, Spot on. it is Warwick Farm. You win a Sugarless lollipop! :D
Really that was a give away as I previously mentioned the "causeway" the dam either side.
I've seen vehicles go into the dam on the entrance to this causeway,
So our volunteers. (ladies of the drivers) formed a special team to pull anyone out of the dam alive, we hoped.
The crossings over the horse tracks were planks of wood, I went off once after bouncing through the crossings,
caused a suspension failure.
Some of the F1 and F5000 cars also had problems or went off, especially on the northern crossing.
Still it was a pity to lose such a circuit close to Sydney, even had a train line for spectators to attend.
These were the days before TV coverage. So large crowds usually attended race meetings.

Since Matt was correct naming the circuit I will add this cover from the event program.

#3 is Mike Eyerly from the USA.
#6 is Max Stewart Aussie driver. (this was picked by NAT22 previously)
#17 is Malcolm Guthrie, entered in this race as from the UK.
#18 is Teddy Pilette from Belgium.

#16 is NOT Keke Rosberg. Sorry he was not in this series or this race.
