Following is an extract from an AKA press release today on KartSportNews.com regarding transponders.
"The (CMS) card system is currently being implemented across the country with July 1, 2010 being the date when all karters will be required to have an AMB transponder fitted to their kart in order to compete.
The AKA and AMB are currently negotiating the rights for AMB to market the completed CMS world wide to various other sporting Associations. The outcome of these negotiations and marketing of the product will in turn prove beneficial to the AKA and it’s members.
Further information on the CMS and the implementation of the system can be obtained by contacting your local State Office on 1300 30 KART (5278)."

any news on how much karters will have to pay???
"Each racing licence holder can purchase a personal transponder from their Club, State Office or the National Office at a discounted price *this price may vary slightly depending on the location."
If the word is can does this mean they wont be compulsory, or maybe they will. Lets run out and buy them for half the karters to crack up then they will make a date for them, then put it off 6 months, then let it fade away like compulsory clutches.
I would rather have a camera on the kart than look up my times on mylaps when we have an alfano for that. But as in a lot of these decisions we don't seem to have a choice. They have there place at big meetings and qualifing but why do we need them for a meeting with 40 - 50 karts. You still have to have lap scorers so it won't save volunteers, in fact find another one to man the timing computer.
Really am getting fed up with being told I have to spend more money so the kids can race.
The transponder which runs off the kart battery will be $225, and the current units used by clubs (own power battery) will be $280.
The whole concept is that the AMB timing will be integrated into the smart card system. When you nominate, you swipe the card, and your nomination is in the system, and you are automatically in the timing system for the days racing. The entire race meeting is then run through the AMB race management.
As in bigger meetings currently it will probably come down to - No transponder no race result
With the money being invested I dont think it is going to go away - free decoders and loops for all tracks so someone has to pay in the long run
Transponders can be shared with people in other classes - as long as you remember to put it on each race and they can be sold when you decide to pull the pin
Im not sure how useful KartCam is once you have gotten over the novelty of a few clips but having someone video from the side is useful to pick up on racecraft situations/opportunities (or lack there of) for post race tutoring (you can even figure out laptimes and between kart splits from the timeline)
Some won't like the idea of their laptimes being so visible to all but it certainly will assist the less experienced to know what they are chasing and get a better understanding of track conditions on the day
It is a mixed bag for sure
Transponders have no place whatsoever in a club meet.... I challenge anyone to try & convince me otherwise.
The AKA and AMB are currently negotiating the rights for AMB to market the completed CMS world wide to various other sporting Associations.
Oh dear.
So you mean to tell me that we haven't even got it right in our own backyard & we're already looking overseas?!?!?
John,
Thanks,
The prices you quote are from National to each State, (and you have been through it so you know that is a great deal), Each State will need to set it's own Price for sale to the clubs, you guys (QLD) were talking subsiding to the karter at one stage? and it is hoped that all the States will assist in this and keep the end price down as low as they can.
One other point, .... No not through the AMB Race Managment system, but Rather through the AKA Race management system (CMS) which is in place at all clubs now and is already being used by most clubs around the country.
AMB are now negotiating with the AKA to sell the total AKA system (CMS) world wide.
The addition of the trany's is just going to add so much ease of operation, particularly for the smaller clubs who battle to find Lap scorers, and race administration people, for now as you say, "swipe the card, and then, print the end results on race day!!" gotta be a step forward?
We appreciate your own efforts as I know you are keen to see all Queenslanders equipped with a trany from your last endevour to make it happen.
Max.
rubbish, will it save on manpower???? In the last 5 years I have seen 4 meetings stopped because the timing system failed because of human errors [ pressing the delete button instead of the save button] if it WASN'T for back up lapscorers that were being used the WHOLE metting would have been LOST!!!!
Any club who wants to run via a computer system alone and NO back up is playing russian roulette as one day it WILL happen!!!
It doesn't get you more laps, more heats, or makes the sport cheaper for kartsre it in fact INCREASES it!!!
Max,
I will stand corrected.....I think I got the total concept bit though....
Paul,
I for one, have pushed for this for approx 7 years. I believe we need to drag this sport out of the past and into the future. Once this system is "fully" operational, I think many will say "why didn't we do this years ago".
Motorcycle Qld introduced compulsory transponders some years ago......everyone screamed blue murder.....within two years, the "dictator" who forced it through was hailed a hero.
This is not only about timing on race day.....data collation, handicap racing...anything/everything becomes easier.....(once it is fully operational). There will be teething problems..no doubt. How we deal with that (positively or negatively) will see how the end product pans out.
No doubt it has uses, and data collection is one thing BUT whats done with that data is the critical thing and will that data be available for ALL to see??. for half mil spent will the gains be noticable to the average karter, eg more racing laps, cheaper racing, less workloads, to me its added a new cost to the new guy getting to the sport, club membership + licence+ transponder =$$$$++ imagine telling the new guy yep spend $3k on a kart and now $600+ getting all the AKA things you need to race. were the karters ever told/asked if they were going to pay for this in the beginning or were we sold the "good things" and left the minor details out??
Yep the sport needs to be dragged forward, but with a clear vision plan, is anything written down??? to me there are bigger issues than a new computer system, and trying to give a professional outlok, my god you have a state about to be found guilty in the FEDERAL court of PRICE FIXING!!!!!! you have their President and VP NAMED individually, and four clubs also named in same action also about to found guilty!! governance on/off/on/?????? direction direction direction is where???
Yep smart card/ trandsponder do and can do wonderful things, but how does that make sport "affordable motorsport" as the sticker says.? if it costs half a mill to take this small step forward geeeez we have no hope of ever affording the leaps we need to get it where it should be!!!

I for one am glad that this system is being implemented. It does make race day so much easier when you go to the office scan the card and your transponder is in the system.
Makes it easier for the office and you can see the times for every meet.
I also just renewed my licence using the new system and think it is brilliant. Nice and easy and got the new licence within a week.
and for $500,000+ IT SHOULD!!! Josh!!!

i know on the weekend our lap scorer (good job craig :D) was running himself dizzy trying to keep track of 16 TAG100 karts, especially since it was so close and there was so much shuffling. introducing transponders is a good step forward, i think people will be happy once it is all up and running. and it might not get rid of the need of a lap scorer, but it will certainly make the job easier and more enjoyable.
