It's the eternal debate. Search for previous posts if you want to go mad!
has anybody else seen / experienced problems with X30's letting go recently?
There have been 3 that I know of at out track that have all had new piston failures......
do you like holden or ford?
both engines seem to be as good as each other and both have a big enough following so if you have a problem at the track someone shoulde be there to help you if something isnt working.
i run a rotax in open and they are a good engine.
my advice is go to your local club and see what most the locals run and go with that.
Speak to your club first. Often there areas which are strong in one type and devoid of the other.
X30 X30 X30 X30 X30 X30 X30 X30 X30 X30 X30 everyday of the week
Speak to Anthony Burke on the formus here. Once an avid rotax man, won't buy one ever again by the sounds of it.
As has been said, both engines are good in their own right but very differant animals.
X30 is simple, reliable and has a tuneable carby, althou once set, it rearly needs changing. Good service life of 20+ hours top end and 40 odd bottom end has been what I have heard with little or required frequent matinance.
Rotax. Cant accidently lean them out to destruction due to a motorbike carbie however, it requres a phisical change of jets if the mixture is wrong and this can not be done if this is descovered when on the track. It only takes a few minutes to do this in the pits but is both a good and bad point of the engine. There is also the carby needle that has 5 "clip positions" for tuning also. once again it takes a few minutes to change in the pits then you are stuck with it once out the gate. The Rotax also has a power valve that is another adjustment and also requires frequent cleaning and maintaince. Exaust matting the the "stinger" needs checking and replacing at quite frequent intervels. Once again not a big deal but some maintaince is required here. The Rotax has proven service life of 25h top end and 50 hours on the bottem end.
The big thing for me is the rotax is a total loss power system which means that it does not charge the battery. This is ok untill you have a sus battery. as the power in the battery drops off, so will the performance of the engine and if you have a battery falure your engine will not run at all.
The X30 does have a charging sustem so if it starts you will have full power. If the battery dies all together you can still start the engine with an external starter and go racing.
The other advantage of the X30 is that is has a replacable cast iron liner so that if the top end fails and destroys the bore, theis liner can be replaced at under half the cost of a new barrel.
I feel the rotax is a slightly quicker engine but only if you get the set up 100% right if not than you will be at a disadvantage in my oppinion.
I have had both engines and my prefrence is the X30.
We have both.
Neither engine is perfect.
Both are maintenance intensive yet both have great features.
One will be quicker at one track but slower at another.
Both engines are so different its easy to see why they should never have to race in the one class.
I do not beleive they should be compared at all. The only thing they have in common is they are 2 strokes.
The X30 is a bit more user friendly than the Rotax......only just in our experiance.
The Rotax is not for the lazy karter. You need to put in the effort with a Rotax. Thats why a lot of people are put off by it.
From an electrical perspective, however, the Rotax is a far better engineered than the X30. The connectors on the X30 are junk! The four pages in the X30 owners manual dedicated to the starter motor is a bit of a worry!
I prefer the Rotax.............................I like a challenge!
X30 vs rotax ........ There is no answer!!!
Frustrating isn't it??!! :)
It would be handy to know what engines and chassis's people are running in the sportsman classes (including restricted). I wish the cms results showed this. I'd be keen to see what chassis/engine combo's were getting results at different clubs. Then there would be facts instead of just opinions. Is this info available somewhere?? If so, can somewone let me know? In circuit racing you can see the car make and engine type on the natsoft results - very handy :)
It does. Go to race standings and customise it. Only as good as the data the entrants put in their pre-entry though.
Sweet. Thanks. Have checked it out .... Not much info.
I guess most people enter on the day at club days hence no details!
Thanks for the tip on where to look ;)
At our recent event in the final in sportsman heavy in the first 2 rows there was 1 rotax, 1 RL and 2 X30's with the rotax off 1.
In restricted light. X30, rotax and Cheatah were the first 3 home.
Restricted heavy, Cheatah, RL, X30 were the first 3 home with the RL setting the fastest lap and a Rotax also posting a time very close.
There is little if anthing between them on our track. Meg Carra said:

That's some mixed results - good to see :)
What track is that?
Adding to the rotax vs x30 debate ... What chassis's are people running with their engines? Can a chassis favour one engine or the other?
I run sportsman restricted with a rotax on an intrepid chassis and it is a good combo and a competitive package. What do you all run and how have you found it?
