Hello all
Thoughts to put out there: Looking at Mostert winning bathurst, plus the deeds of whincup, winterbottom et.al. Just pondering why guys like sera, wall and troy hunt, arguably 3 of the best in Australian karting across many categories, have not ever made it to the level of the other guys mentioned. These 3 karters are elite steerers and I believe could be much better than some of the drivers in the elite category in Aust! Why haven't they ever had the chance or is it luck, money or a combination of many other things. Just a thought to put out there, what do you think?
PS this is not to put down the people mentioned, purely a thought. I believe they could have been good at the elite level.

I wise man once told me to make a career out of driving race cars you need 3 things ( not in any order ) money, talent and network. If you have all three you might make it . drop one of theese 3 things you are left with only 2 things . you will then  need  a 4th thing LUCK .Take out the luck and thats why they are not driving race cars now because thay all have the talent.

At the 'elite' level? Why is their the assumption that car racing is the 'elite' level. 99.99% of the car racing world would have their arse handed to them on a plate if they ever tried to compete with guys like Ardigo, Lammer etc...
Why have some car racers never made it to the elite level of karting? Why did they never make that step up?
Would have to agree with the three requirements, Talent, is the natural bit you have it or you don't, Money for me IS the stopper of most, seen plenty equally as good as those mentioned but $$s just stops them dead. NETWORK is very important, just look at young Scotty Mac he had the talent and the cash and a good network contacts in the right places. BUT to go overseas and maybe look for F1 $$$ and network are the thing and sometimes LUCK can get you into the network.
Look at young Brabham he didn't stay in karts long.

But also been told if you are still racing karts at 16 you are on the verge of being too old. The hard thing is knowing which avenue to take, if looking at v8s whats after karts, if F1 whats the step for that direction????

Look behind many sucesful karters and you see mum and dad and debt. Lickily Chaz can help repay that debt, look at what Casey Stoner's parents did, look at what debt Webber got into to get where he is, it takes real courage to follow those dreams from everyone not just the driver.
Gotta have TALENT. Gotta have MONEY, lots of it. and equally as important is LUCK or I prefer to use the word SERENDIPITY- being in the right place at the right time. One story I heard was about Garth Tander. He had the talent, and he had, thanks to his family putting everything on the line, the money but there were no seats in V8s but then Garry Rogers had an opening and the rest is history he just happened to be in the right place at the right time. If that hadn't happened who knows they may have run out of money and come back to WA. On the other side of the coin James Courtney and Ryan Briscoe junior and senior Kart world champs at a young age  got spots as F1 test drivers for Jaguar and Toyota respectively both teams had problems and left both talented drivers without seats. same with Webber he night never have got an F1 drive if the Aussie Paul Stoddart hadn't bought Minardi. Right Place, right time.

Anyone else believe that brains and a real drive to want to reach that goal comes into play? Surely knowing the business of motor racing is better than waiting on dumb luck
Talent, brains, money, passion, desire even 'knowing the business of motor racing' and even 'networking' are important but without  'being in the right place at the right time' (serendipity) forget it. I agree you can't wait on dumb luck you've got to put yourself in the right place and go for it but sometimes it just doesn't happen. Both Courtney and Briscoe did everything right, won world titles in karts moved to Italy as teenagers, got gigs as F1 test drivers but wrong place wrong time. So it never happened for them in F!. There are heaps of good young karters  with immense talent trying to make it in Europe. Joey Mawson, James Allen from WA, even Nick De Vries an amazing junior karter in Europe,  all would know the business of motor racing but they haven't found the elusive path to F1 yet- just haven't been in the right place at the right time.
They have "brains and a real desire to reach that goal" they must also have money, but the door hasn't opened yet.
