It makes sense to me that Tag Open should be ran on MG reds.
Once restrictor is out I beleive the next natural progression should be to stay on the reds.
This effect IMO would move more restricted drivers who have chosen to stay in that class to move out into open Tag, therefore still having restricted as was intended as an introductory class not a permanent class.
At the moment its plain to see running yellows and staying competative is costly. Using reds is a different story. At club level I see it as a huge cost saving change after all a huge percentage are just that, club racers who dont want the extra costs of sticky tyres. If you want to race on them there are appropriate series and events. If speed and grip is not enough for you on reds you have the choice to race those events or series.
As for the restrictor does it cause issues with the motor as it cant perform how intended anyway?? Will re-builds be reduced??
IMO I think reds are the go then you can get the most from your engine how it was designed to perform without the expense of new tyres every meeting to stay competative. JMO

agree, i am in the process of getting it up for 2010 at our club, but it will be under the sportsman banner, looking very much like we will have it at this point.
My Gambier already has a Sportsman 125 class (running reds) but as the majority of club day racers run rotax they seem to have a preference of staying with their Mojos
But your correct in saying they certainly dont seem to want to waste their money on yellows
As long as everyone is in the same boat - racing is racing!

Yep, Gotta agree, Portland now have a number of 125's racing clubdays, on Reds and having a ball. Grip levels are great, they ar an economical tyre and work well
TAG on reds is probably a good thing for people who only want to race club days but now I have my full licence I would rather do the vic country series on good sticky rubber at a variety of tracks then race at the same track once every month on reds. I thought the reds were great tyres for TAG-R but running unrestriced on them dosnt interest me.
I think running TAG on Reds is the best thing that could happen for the class - whether it be at National Level or Club Level. They are a good tyre and good set up will be rewarded, whereas on yellows you can miss the set up (a bit) and still be OK. One of the things that i've heard around the traps is that the MOJO's don't offer that much more grip than the reds, I remember racing rotax on Bridgey's and they were woeful, bought a leopard raced on Yellows, awesome tyre, but to be honest if you want to be competative, even at club level, you will need a new set everytime you race. But horses for courses, I know there a lot of people who would love to see this class go the MG Reds, but the MG Yellows have a following too . . . so it's always going to be up for discussion I guess.
Cheers
Phil
PS: I for one, would upgrade my licence back to B Grade if this class was run on Reds
the thing is, going to unrestricted with reds really is just removal of a restricter, it seems to me to be a natural progression for the more club oriantaed racer. Re new tyres every meet to really be competitive, well even in restricted i must say i only run 2-3 meetings on a set, and i do notice a drop off after the first meeting. But no matter what u do someone will always do more...
Thing is, if this does get up at clubs, and gets a following, then im sure Allstars, Country series etc will offer it as a class, it does not ever have to be included in the national titles etc, keep it club level and to smaller series'
We are very close to getting it at our club, its under discussion at present, and the feedback from fellow drivers last sunday showed that it would get a grid.

Here in SA we are lucky enough to have SPORTSMAN 125 which is exactly that TAG on MG REDS all at 160kg for lights and 180kg for Heavy. Its designed particularly for the club racer and seems to be very successfull.Numbers are definetly growing i can get at least 3 meets out of tyres plus the odd practice which makes it very cost effective. There arent really any trophy hunters buying new tyres every meet which is good, the racing is fairly close and overall great fun.Leopard is still offered on yellows of course for the bigger meets which is also good, but for me ill take sportsman 125 any day.The class is being offered at the city of adelaide titles this year, and i think come next year with the TAG R guys off restrictors it will be a BIG class.
Rob Bonazinga said:So is there your usual Leopard classes which is on yellows and Sportsman 125 which is same engine and all just on the reds??.
We Have Leopard Class , Rotax Class both in their own formula and then we allow them to combine in a Sportsman 125 in which case all they are all using Reds
Which is the faster engine in the sportsman class on MG Reds, the Rotax or the Leopard???

i think the idea is a good one. if you have rotax, why not just run in the rotax class? they have it down pat with the mojo's. they have similar life to the red's.
There is a cool article on karting1.co.uk at the moment about reducing costs and getting KF to the club racer. Interesting video and I think the concept of long life tires is the way to go.

I guess the other benifet at our club is numbers too.Instead of racing another 5 people in LEOPARD/ROTAX, when theyre combined you get 10-12 ? Mojos maybe similar to reds i guess most club racers just want half a decent field and good fun racing? We have our festival state cup where they offer leopard/rotax but fields are bigger in sportsman generally?
