Anyone else miss them?
What would be the chances of them returning to karting?
Has insurance killed their return all together?

This is somthing i have been waiting to talk about i never got to do a street race but from what iv found out the aka will never do them again because of the incident where a racer was killed due to bad use of barriers. I think we should move past it and have street races again look at the exposure it gives karting in places like New Zealand they have a street race in Hamilton and that rok island race in America they get full TV coverage and it gets run like a V8 supercar round. One street race will get more people interested in karts then a 10min report on rpm ever will and will probably be the biggest meeting on the karting calender. I think we should push to bring these meetings back.
i would run, as long as all requirments are met id be willing to race.
If one was organized it would be huge. I never got the chance to run Portland. From what I hear it was great. Raced at Canberra and Shepparton though, and were great.
Yeah would be awsome to run I herd a rumour that Portland were trying to run one again but I duno if it was true.
Can anyone in the know tell me exactly why we can't run a street meeting?
Not to be insensitive, but it's not the first time a person had died during a sporting activity.
With proper safety barriers, is there any reason we can't have a street meeting?
Do the AKA have any real stance on the issue?
Street meetings can still be run..
but the insurance costs are through the roof
but also the specifications of the track have to be similiar
if not the same to a standard sprint racing track e/g run off areas
tire barriers and so
that is what i was told by an offical and believe is the reason
for no more street meetings as there is no places with enough
room for runn off areas and tire barriers
insurance has ruined so many fun things! Why cant i risk my life in peace!

Ran lets be hornest, its not really the insurance that has ruined the sport but d1%kheads, and than they sue and win the case because the organisers did not cover all avenues.
Can we just not draft up an indemnity stating competing is at the drivers own risk?
i remember ages back when i was reading an article of KartOz that covered the Portland Street Grand Prix, Mark Winterbottom was in his Tony Kart racing Adam Klunyk in the inset picture.... I also think there was one run here (SA) in Murray Bridge, which also suffered. i always wanted to do it, and the advertising, you guys are more than right, would be ASTRONOMICAL, really get the sport of karting into the public peoples heads whens its RACING THROUGH THEIR MAIN STREET!!!!
However, when people speak of barriers, i dont think there is much they can do when you hit a Concrete, Plastic, Tire, even those new technology SOFT barriers. especially with the New leopard classes and so forth in place, the barrier isnt gonna stop you flying outta your kart when you hit it head on, no matter what they use for it. Tyler mentioned run-off areas, thats all we could use, but it would be pretty hard making a run off area on a circuit that needs to be dismantled.
if anyone has some solution, definatly post them, it would be amazing to have a street race back again. put some money up for grabs in a few classes, you would have driver flocking from far and wide.

No, you cannot give away your common law rights. This is why indeminity forms are largely bluff on the part of anyone who gets you to sign one. As to running another street race, yes it can be done but don't ask the AKA to get involved as they won't sanction it. The only barriers that I can see working would be air wall inside of concrete or tyres as it is the only barrier that would not deflect a kart back onto the track, this being what happened at Wollongong. There should be a lot of air wall available when OP closes down but it would not be enough and the stuff is very expensive.
It really that you or anybodu can not host a street racing, the biggerest problem is "STREET GUTTERS". What to do about them. You can have all the run off on the world but WHAT TO ABOUT THE GUTTERS. This proberly why the council, and insurance will not surpoort the idea.
