I’ve recently been getting back into karting after 20 odd years and got a rotax EVO. Inspecting the engine I’ve noticed the reed block doesn’t provide a complete seal as seen in the attached photo. I have inspected a second engine which has a similar issue. It appears the reed block casting is not particularly well matched to the reed petals. In my old days of engine building I have never seen such poor sealing of the reed block. Does anyone have any experience as to whether this is normal on a rotax and impact to performance.

Yes that would impact on performance , by how much I don't know, and no I have not seen another set of reeds like that.
The quality of the reed block and its casting is fine. The reed petals are your issue, they appear not as wide on each petal as is needed and that is where the gaps are appearing.
Can only suggest you try another set of petals.
Thanks Ian. The petals look in good condition and all measurements match the homologation drawing dimensions. I’ll get another set of petals and see how they look.
