so whats the go with 09 barrels ?ive been told there 2-3 tenths quicker and some people have been told they will be available in about a month at a cost of around $800 now hasnt this just kicked the whole rotax being great again wright in the balls i mean if you have a rotax that has the new clutch and all there gear (that realy is an 09 rotax that has 08 barrel on it )are you going to be able to bring your barrel up to 09 spec at your cost of course or is IKD going to give you your correct barrel for your recently purchased 09 rotax ??????????? Col over to you (ps love your work and you fongy )

Easy there tiger!
You will probably find the new rotax barrels won't be available until after the pro tour. From what I have heard, they will be around the same pace as a fast rotax at the moment. Yes, they will probably beat your regular knock about club day engine.
The new barrels are CNC machined, and a slightly different shape to try and improve piston life (not that it's a real problem anyway).
Yes it will cost a bit, but there is nothing really anyone can do. They can't keep importing '08 barrels forever.
I don't think that just because they are introducing a new motor, that it will mean that the class now isn't great. I mean, look at Clubmans, you are lucky to find 2 motors at a similar pace, and Leopard is in the same situation as Rotax at the moment as they are also introducing a new model motor into the class.
Probably no need for a royal commission into it.
this is starting to really pi$$ me off! I bought a brand new rotax in Nov'08 cos I was told its the most stable class and its not a form of 'chequebook racing'!
yeah i mean whats the go you buy a new rotax 3 weeks ago that has just arrived in OZ and it has 08 barrel on it and you wont get an 09 barrel in exchange when there allowed to be used Gee that's a great deal why wasn't this sorted before the start of the year didn't any one put there hand up and say after 08 is 09 ?and lets get things really sorted cos were having a big series with rotax engines

I think you will find they are better than 2 - 3 10ths quicker, ask RV because he has actually seen them in action in Asia.
It's a joke isn't it ? Rotax can't make a new barrel that is no different performance wise to the previous one. I wonder why not ? Because if you make a new barrel that's 2 - 3 tenths quicker, every man and his dog needs a new barrel once just one person starts the keep up with the Jones show and if you multiply $800 by 3000 engines already sold in Aus, that's a lot of influence on your manufacturing tolerances.
And racers would never agree to boycott the new barrel and very cleverly vote with their wallets because Mr. Jones above will buy one and use it even while he's agreeing with you to boycott them and so it goes on.
The answer is CNC machined liner inserts. The AKA has rules now that only engines with such spec will be homologated. so apply that rule to the new barrel. And if you did that, you wouldn't get screwed for the cost of this new barrel and next years and the one after, you'd only have to give your existing barrel to a designated engine builder who would bore the barrel and fit the liner.
So keep complaining and get all your mates to complain because neither Rotax or its agents and retailers are going to cut their income flogging barrels until it becomes unviable for them to deny it.

Not jumping on anything mate - just a bit annoyed that my 6 month old engine is (possibly) about to be made slower than the folk with the bigger wallets.....dunno about you, but my wage aint big enough for big spending to remain competitive (6 months after buying the latest spec they had on offer).... that was one of the reasons for leaving clubman! (oh - and the beer belly making me 10kg overweight!)

I have been racing rotax for years and everytime a new series motor comes out, or little changes are made everyone starts with this two tenths quicker propaganda!!! If they had gotten 2 tenths quicker every time i heard this i reckon rotax's would now give a cik kart a run for their money. The fear of a new motor being 2 tenths quicker is a good way to sell lots of new motors! I have had two motors an 04 and an 06 and they are still keeping up with all the newer models and im sure they will be just as competitive as the new cnc barrels. I was told the new clutch was 2 tenths faster the other day. 2 tenths is a magical number. Let the panic begin once they land here and no one can get anywhere near them on the track. I know i'm not going to rush out and buy one. If any of you do rush out and buy one i will buy your old motor off you really cheap as it is now always going to be 2 tenths slower than your new one!
The new barrel has only been approved for club use only by AKA....IE No states/nationals etc....What a joke. Apparently the exhaust port is 1mm bigger than the previous model. IKD have made the decision not to distribute - because of the lunatic rule of the AKA - until the testing and approval for use in all events has been given. Congrats Blacky - common sense call - at least you could see the potential drama with the AKA ruling, even if they couldn't.

Im looking for a couple of cheap Rotax motors (08 would be great!)
Joel I believe your point about "let the panic begin" is spot on!
Sure if there is as much variation in the old as everyone keeps saying then the new will be more "consistently fast" - but isnt that what we are all asking for CONSISTENCY !
The issue I see is the PRE 08 can have their ports timed, Squish & CC's optimised but as the rules stand the 08 can not ie there may be a trade of in some cases of port timing against optimum CC's and Squish. Despite that other engine builders I trust have indicated that with the correct setup / gearing etc the 08 can still be quick.
So it would seem logical that to stop confusion the rules for the 08 Barrel could be the same as Pre 08 and the changes to take effect when the New 09 barrels are available
