Removing carbon from piston top and head (Method and legality question)

Just pulled off the barrel to change the ring (first time :D) and I have a bit of carbon built up on top of the piston and a little on the head dome. Is it allowed within the rules to clean this up with a bit of 800 grit wet with a bit of petrol? Or is another method preferred?
