I have a few questions about the Leopard Motor.
I am going to seniors in May, and dad and i are considering me racing 2 classes. Clubman heavy is the first, and possibly Leopard as my second.
How long is it between rebuilds?
are the motors supposed to remain 'Stock', like a Rotax? (but you can rebuild them)
And how long do the tyres last?
thanks guys!

Hi Callan,
We're probably not able to answer that question accurately right at this moment. Reason being, with the "old" ignition module guys were revving their engines to 17K plus (with obviously shortened lifespan as a result). With the new ignition module to become mandatory (and restricting revs to 15.5K or so? someone correct me...) you're going to see much longer lifespan.
MG yellows are a reasonably grippy tyre, and longevity is probably not their strong point! :-) (braking capacity on the other hand, yeeha!) Generally you can expect to get a State Title race (2 x qualifying, 2 x heats, prefinal and final), and then some practice out of a set. If your setup sucks you can really chew them up. With a good setup they last quite well.
I much prefer setting karts up on yellows than Mojo's though, I find the mojo's quite non-responsive...
i normally do about 5 hours between rebiulds...see how it goes with rev limit....cols right about the tyres...i think the rev limit is 15800...the engine and carbi are only aloud like minor mods i think ...

5 Hours! WOW! Dad was after like a more economical class... Clubmans arn't that bad with around 8 hours per rebuild, and 4 or 5 meetings on tyres.
What would be another class thats faster than J's, and is pretty economical?
I could also do Rotax, coz we have 2 motors that my dad used to race...but there are not many people that race them =(
clubmans usually need a top end rebuild after 6hr. full at around 10.
tyres go off after 2 meetings(competitive times), so you will get 2 full meetings out of them, then at least 2 good practice sessions.
Rev limiter at 15.8 would probably run them out longer then a clubman cos 1200 revs is A LOT of difference... mg yellows after the first meeting lose about 3 tenths but u can easily do 2 meetings... but in rotax to be competitive u definately need new mojos every meeting

oh ok... so from my experience, J's are probably the most cost efficeint class.
I might still get into a Leopard eventually...
Hey Luke.... you need tyres to be competitve in every class....not just Mojo's... from experience running Mojo's they are still a great consistent tyre for up to 2 Club Days after a Open meeting... couldn't get that out of some others tyre brands I've used....

Just my experience with the Leopard, 10 hours for top end freshen, 22 hours for full rebuild.
Tyres, well depending on track, Cooloola 3 meetings then used as practice tyres, Gladstone 1 meeting, Bundaberg 2 meetings max. But then again I am on a budget and was never at the pointy end where some had new tyres every meeting.

I think mark hogan is spot on 10 hrs top 20 plus full rebuild,i went a whole season ,did one main bearing(through having chain to tight) 5 hr rebuilds is not nessesary even for a front runner IMO.They are a fantastic motor and very reliable,Motors are a bit of a lucky dip,you get one built on a friday it may not be as good as one built on a tues(my brother had one of those)
