Ok im fairly new in Superkarts (although suckered in to be the QLD Secretary :) )
Anyway i see people using HANS devices and others not , people say yes they work and others dont. On the SWG there is a topic discussing this but would like to know what people use and why and if there is any science in choosing one. Now i realise the top 5 vertebra are the most important etc and after a high speed tyre blow out on the weekend i realise even more now. Anyway would like to hear what people have found out so im not reinventing the wheel.
Thanks
Cameron

Reading the info on the SWG site made me think long and hard about it too.
It seems.....that in a front on (into a wall) it will save you from injury.
However...If you roll over AKA Anton, it may break your neck.
Yes the Bass team have worn them, but I don't know that they wear them all the time.
It's a hard one
Keep researching before buying one.
But welcome to what is after all a reasonably safe sport.
Good Luck, and MOST importantly ENJOY
Re: HANS Devices- So whats out there?
Coming out of the kart is a very safe thing. I've seen 3 major high speed barrel rolls over the last 15 years of 250 webmaster racing, Amaroo Pk, Baskerville and Anton's Eastern Creek when he hit me (saw the pictures). All these cases would have been 10 times worst if not fatal if they remained in the kart. This needs to be a main factor when considering a neck restraint.
A neck brace of some sort could actually work against you.

i spun at 150km and didnt leave the track (tyre bead broke). [/quote]
So why was this so? Were you running bead locks in your rims?

It will feel weird for the first few times you wear it, however after wearing it and getting used to it you wont go out with out one again
Good luck and select carefully............................
