Here's the link to free practice times, http://www.cikfia.com/Live/Live_Assen_2009.html
Many big names didn't seem to make it out including Carlo but Sam managed 16th quickest out of the 35 that ran, obviously getting quicker as the session went on. Bennett was the fastest as usual.
Well done to Carlo, not far behind the front running guys....but Sam???submitting your resume to TDR or something are ya??? Just kidding, good on both Aussies for representing us over there & good luck over the rest of the weekend - I'll be watching the live timing! :D
Well done for Carlo, he has done us very proud, good effort in such a short time. Sam must have still been having issues with his hire drive and finished the second race in 39th. No doubt he plans to return better prepared next time. Still a good effort for stepping into an unknown kart.
I can help you out with what you dont know about the event as I seen it myself. Trust me, you all need to come over hear and have a look. You may not believe what you see. When I get back home I will show you some pics about what was there. Development of webmasters in Europe is now to the point that the tyres are having problems keeping up. But thats another story. Sam did a great job all things considered. Had gearbox problems from the start, new webmaster and track to learn etc it was all against him but to come from 33rd to 19th was a sensational effort. Its hard to be at the front over here. Even seasoned campaigners have problems. Carlo went well due mainly to a geart qualifying effort. Its very much like F1 over here. He had great starts but by about lap 4 the tyres were like marshmellows. As the fuel load went out it got worse. Dont forget, they are 50km races with about 18 litres of fuel on board. Less weight over the front, less turn in, less braking on the front. He also put a new seat in because he has lost more weight and the balance was not quite right but he could sit lower so the rear wing worked better making the turn in even worse. Assen was a sensational event. I will be coming back here for sure and I urge all of you to make the effort to come and have a look. Just tell them you have a webmaster in Australia and you will be very welcome anywhere. The European competitors and fantastic people. Better still, I had talks with some of them and maybe we might see at least 4 of the top teams compete at a round of the Nationals next year.
Just got home. In my last 40 hours of travel, been at Assen, drove to Amsterdam for the night, left lunchtime and drove to Brussels, got the train the London, got the train to Heathrow, fly to Bangkok, fly to Sydney. Eyes are closing now..... :o

This is what happened in second race. I got an early hot shower while still in the leathers.
Sponnie was fixing something here......meanwhile I'll just get myself a beer.....
Just received a text message from Sam which reads in part:
Started 34 and finished 19th. Best I could do the kart is still so foreign to me. Kart is still losing gears.
I actually got up to 17th but was finding neuteral when changing gears from 2nd to 3rd in the last lap. First lost a comfortable gap then swallowed by 3 karts but pegged back 1. This video is the first 9 mins of race 1. I only had about 13 laps experience prior to this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llQNj5kTMnY
Carlo's gear seems to be going real good. He has Poul Peterson helping him at the track which would be valuable when Carlo brings his new gear home to race. Should make for some very intresting racing. His kart, engine, driving and fitness has picked up well since he last raced in Australia. ;)
Guys, Assen NL was round 3. Autodrome Most Czech Rep Round 2 and Magny Cours France was round 1. All were fantastic. I was luck enough to be at Assen. It is amazing that even though we are on he other side of the planet we are still interested in what they do and vice versa. Take it from me, if you get the chance to come over and have a look do so. It is worth the effort. To Carlo and Sam, competing in these events is about the coolest thing you could ever do in webmastering world.
